Back in 2016, I was working remotely from Colombia. Fearing the loss of my phone, I made what I thought was a logical decision at the time – I deactivated two-factor authentication on my Gmail accounts. Despite using unique and strong passwords for both my personal and business emails, I fell victim to what seemed like a phishing attack or social engineering. The attackers first accessed my personal Gmail, then used it to get into my business account. I was on the brink of losing not just my crypto assets but also my entire digital identity, saved only by a last-minute security measure. This experience was a wake-up call about the vital importance of digital security.

As marketers, we handle vast amounts of data, making us prime targets for cybercriminals. They use sophisticated tactics like CEO fraud, social engineering, and phishing scams to gain access to valuable information. The golden rules of passwords

  1. Unique & Strong: Opt for complex passwords. Simple combinations won’t cut it anymore. Think along the lines of f3cU#V#hdaoOv7N1qV!5.
  2. Password Manager: Use tools like LastPass or 1Password. These manage your passwords, so you don’t have to rely on memory.
  3. Two-factor authentication: your safety net

Turn on two-factor authentication wherever possible. This additional layer of security, often a time-sensitive code, significantly bolsters your defence against unauthorised access.

Phishing: don't take the bait

Be vigilant about unsolicited requests for your credentials. Scammers are crafty and their tactics ever-evolving. Always verify the source before engaging.

How to set up two-factor authentication (2FA)

  1. Understand Your Options: Know what 2FA options are available for each account.
  2. Choose a 2FA Method: Options include Google Authenticator, LastPass Authenticator, biometrics, or hardware solutions like YubiKeys.

  4. Test: Ensure it works by attempting a login from a different mode or device.
